Located centrally along the northern border of the state, Lancaster County covers 549 square miles and includes three incorporated communities. Bordered by the Catawba River and close to a number of lakes and waterways, Lancaster is just three hours from the North Carolina mountains to the northwest, and the beautiful shores of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to the southeast.

Lancaster is the county seat Lancaster County. It was founded by settlers from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who had come to America from England. The red rose was the emblem of the House of Lancaster during England's War of the Roses (1455-1485); thus the nickname of South Carolina's Lancaster is the "Red Rose City." Its citizens are called "Lancastrians."
