
Fort Mill, South Carolina
Nestled in the gentle rolling foothills of South Carolina´s York County just south of the southern North Carolina state line near the beauty of Catawha River and Lake Wylie lies the idyllic community of Fort Mill. Fort Mill is located just a few miles north of Rock Hill and is 15 miles south of the major metropolis of Charlotte, North Carolina. The estimated population of Fort Mill is 9,000 people.
History is a large part of Fort Mill, where the last full Confederate Cabinet meeting was held at the White Homestead. Once, 30,000 Catawba Indians roamed the area until small pox and other diseases claimed two-thirds of the population. What is presently known as Nations Ford Road was once part of the trade route for settlers and Indians to travel from Pennsylvania to Charleston, S.C. In the 1800's several railroads ran through the area to a station in Fort Mill; trains still make frequent trips through the area. One of the area's largest manufacturing companies, Springs Industries provides employment for most of the small town, consisting of 9,000 residents. Several new developments are being added to Fort Mill. With its easy access to I-77 but small town ambiance, Fort Mill attracts many new residents.
Although small, Fort Mill has a strong economy being home to several nationally renowned businesses. Spring Industries, one of the nation's largest textile manufacturing companies, have their headquarters in Fort Mill. The city has also gained famed as the location of the now defunct, Heritage USA, a Christian-themed amusement park that was the brainchild of notorious evangelist, Jim Bakker. Many of Fort Mill´s residents also seek out the more diverse business and employment opportunities in the Greater Charlotte Metropolitan Area. Another great community events are attendance at the Charlotte Knights minor league baseball games where the home stadium is in Fort Mill.
